The QEII’s IR team is the first to say the best patient care is interdisciplinary. This means QEII teams, often including surgery, oncology, and others across the hospital come together to assess an individual’s unique situation before presenting options.
IR can be a lifesaver – using wires and tubes to reach the target organ and deliver treatment.
Anything from a stroke to a blood clot, tumour or dangerous abscess could bring you to the IR suites. These teams also provide vital support to dialysis and chemotherapy patients – inserting IV lines and ports that stay with patients throughout their care.
The QEII Foundation partnered with the province, providing an incredible $1.25 million through our We Are campaign to ensure the suites are equipped with the latest technology and funded an 11-bed recovery area. QEII radiologists believed in the project so much, they provided a matching gift of $200,000 to encourage community support.
In addition to slashing wait times, the new IR suites and its leading-edge technology has allowed the QEII to perform new, innovative procedures that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible, like Canada's first MR fusion-guided biopsies to help detect prostate cancer earlier, Atlantic Canada's first AngioVac procedure to treat endocarditis (a life-threatening inflammation in the heart), and cryoablation treatments to destroy tumors through freezing
