ENT surgeons, oncologists and business leaders were among participants growing their facial hair in the name of head and neck cancer research and patient care at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

Individuals across the region put a face to head and neck cancer as they recruited friends, family and colleagues to sponsor their beards in support of those touched by this devastating disease.

Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and affects some of the most personal aspects of life, including facial appearance and the ability to speak and eat.

The QEII Health Sciences Centre and its Head and Neck Cancer Site Team is leading the country in laser surgery for oral cancer – as the only centre in Canada using this procedure extensively as a first step in cancer treatment. Laser surgery can reduce the radiation dosage a patient requires and, in some cases, eliminate the need for chemotherapy treatment altogether.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of QEII Foundation donors and campaign leaders, more than $38,000 was raised to enhance care for head and neck cancer patients being treated at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

In fact, local fundraising efforts and community support have earned Halifax a top fundraising title across Canada – raising a total of $118,000 over three years.
