The QEII Foundation celebrates $1.1-million gift from The Jack and Joan Kiuru Foundation

Ethos with HyperSight radiotherapy technology

The QEII Foundation is celebrating a generous $1.1-million gift from The Jack and Joan Kiuru Foundation that will help bring state-of-the-art medical equipment and technology to the QEII Health Sciences Centre over the next five years.

The visionary donation will support the QEII Foundation’s $100-million We Are campaign and help enhance diagnostics, treatments and access to care for the patients and families who rely on Atlantic Canada’s largest and most specialized adult hospital.

The latest gift builds on a remarkable legacy of philanthropy from The Jack and Joan Kiuru Foundation and reflects the values of its late namesakes, Jack and Joan Kiuru. Born and raised in Nova Scotia before building a successful business career, Jack maintained strong ties to his home province and a deep commitment to giving back.

The Jack and Joan Kiuru Foundation has already helped transform cancer care through a previous $1-million donation to the QEII Foundation supporting Ethos with HyperSight (pictured above) — world-leading radiotherapy technology that uses advanced imaging and artificial intelligence to personalize treatment in real time. That donor-supported technology enabled the QEII Cancer Centre to become the first hospital in Canada to use HyperSight imaging on patients, helping reduce the number of radiation treatments required for eligible patients, accelerate first-in-the-world research initiatives, inspire additional government investment and, ultimately, improve care for patients.

“We are deeply grateful to The Jack and Joan Kiuru Foundation for this extraordinary gift and for the lasting impact their generosity is having through our We Are campaign,” says Susan Mullin, president and CEO of the QEII Foundation. “Their support has already helped bring best-in-class radiotherapy technology to the QEII, and this new investment will continue to fuel innovation and ensure more patients and families can access exceptional care close to home.”

The Jack and Joan Kiuru Foundation’s investment will help advance projects aligned with key pillars of the QEII Foundation’s We Are campaign — reducing wait times, improving access to care, supporting the recruitment and retention of top clinical talent, and enabling more personalized treatment options. By ensuring QEII healthcare teams have access to leading-edge equipment and technology that might otherwise remain out of reach, this gift will help strengthen the QEII’s position as a destination for clinical excellence and innovation — bringing more life-changing advances to patients across Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.
