A community of donors raised $2.5-million to transform care for neuroscience patients at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
Extraordinary milestone
Opening the state-of-the-art IMCU
In December 2016, the QEII Health Sciences Centre and QEII Foundation celebrated an extraordinary milestone in the Neuroscience Alliance program – the opening of our new state-of-the-art neurosurgical Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
• The new IMCU, which opened on December 5, is increasing the number of neurosurgical patients the QEII can care for post-surgery by 50 per cent.
• This unit was made possible by the QEII Foundation’s Neuroscience Alliance campaign, which saw a community of donors raise $2.5-million to transform care for neuroscience patients at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
• As part of the campaign, donors played an integral role in expanding the unit and increasing the neurosurgical IMCU beds from four to six.
• The new neurosurgical IMCU supports patients who:
o are admitted from the emergency department that need careful neurological monitoring;
o are recovering from brain or spinal surgery; or
o no longer need to be in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but still require a heightened level of care.
• The innovative space features the latest technology and enhances the comfort and overall experience of patients and their families during some of the toughest moments of their lives.
